ADDITIONAL INSURANCE INFORMATION
Cover 2: Your Insurance Through the Washington State Coaches Association
I’ve been working as the insurance consultant for the Washington State Coaches Association since 2005. In that time, I’ve answered countless questions about how the association’s liability policy protects you, the member coach. I finally had the bright idea to make this available to you, so you can educate yourself on one of the major benefits of membership.
Your association’s liability insurance protects the individual member coach for General Liability coverage in the amount of $1,000,000 per person and $2,000,000 in aggregate. This includes coverage for sexual harassment and molestation. In addition the cost to defend the coach is borne through the insurance policy.
National Casualty Company through Wells Fargo Insurance Services underwrites the insurance.
What this insurance doesn’t cover:
- Protection for events – all-star games, camps, clinics, fundraisers, etc. You must purchase individual event coverage for these. If the event is sanctioned by the WSCA, then there is a policy in place to properly insure this risk.
- Protection for you outside the scope of coaching your programs, i.e. AAU.
- Protection from parents. This does not help if you are fighting with parents or your job is being jeopardized due to allegations over your ability as a coach and leader. You need an attorney for this. Insurance is solely for your negligence if someone is injured under your watch.
What the insurance does cover:
- Protection for you individually for all coaching you do in association with your coaching job during the season.
- Protection while you take your athletes to camp, clinics, etc. Remember, the insurance protects YOU, not the event. You must be found individually negligent for bodily injury, property damage, or abuse and molestation.
- Protection for you individually if you are running a camp for someone else. Example – you are hired by the local Parks & Recreation department to teach basketball at one of their camps. This insurance will protect you individually if you are sued because someone is hurt.
Insurance may be the most important benefit you receive from the WSCA. Your financial ability to pay for claims you are liable for are being transferred to another entity, and they are picking up the tab to defend you.
The most important thing you should remember is that this insurance applies to you as an individual coach, not as a substitute for an event. There is no participant accident coverage, or protection for other coaches or volunteers. This is about YOU!

Please keep in mind that I am your consultant, not the agent. My loyalty is responsibility is to you and your association. I can’t bind coverage, but I can point you in the right direction. I spent 6 years as Head Girls Basketball Coach at North Kitsap HS. I understand fully your liability and exposure. I’m here to help you make sure that you’re not hit by a blind-side blitz!
Thank you for all you do for our youth in this state.
Best,
